About Residential Grid-Connected Solar Systems
A solar system integrates into new and existing a homes or a building  to generate  electricity.  When a solar system is installed in unused roof space, it is connected to the local utility so that excess electricity generated by the solar panels can be fed into the utility grid, and any power needed more than what the solar system can produce, is drawn from the utility grid.

Main Components in a Solar System
  • Solar Panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity.  They are typically mounted in a frame which in turn is attached to the roof of a home or commercial property or ground mounted on a piece of land close to the site.
  • Wiring carries this electricity from panels to the rest of the system.
  • Inverter converts the the direct current (DC) from the solar panels into the alternating current (AC) electricity you currently use.
  • Net Meter works like an existing meter, but can turn backwards to accumulate credit when the solar system produces excess electricity.
  • Mounting/Racking frames holds the solar panels on the roof or on the floor
  • Combiner Box gathers all of the Solar Panel connections.
  • DC Breaker Box safely shuts down your solar power system at a moment's notice, allowing for safe maintenance, repair, and inspection.
  • Grid Disconnect allows to stop the flow of electricity between the solar power system and the electrical utility grid. This provides for the safe maintenance of electrical and utility systems.

Net metering legislation states that the utility company must credit you at retail rates (the same rate they would have charged you). Therefore, time-of-use customers will be credited peak rates for power fed into the grid during peak hours.

Solar electric modules do not heat water. They convert sunlight into electricity that's used just like the electricity you receive from the utility. These systems are often confused with solar thermal panels that circulate water heated by the sun.

A system does not need to cover your entire electrical load. A small system that displaces one quarter to half of your demand can still reduce your bill from the utility. A 5kW system may replace up to 80% of a home’s electrical needs. However, with rebates or tax credits from the Federal and State government, this amount may be reduced by up to 90%.

If a roof-mounted system is not practical, ground mounted systems are another option.
